Tax and Donations

Donate because it is Important but enjoy the benefits at the same time

While tax deductions are a great benefit of donating your money to a charity, you should keep in mind what donating is really about. It is more than just tax benefits. Donating to a charity is about helping our neighbors who have been affected with a life-changing situation. There are many charities available for a variety of causes. Various charitable organizations go towards helping out those who have been diagnosed with different types of cancers, such as Breast Cancer, Lung Cancers, or Leukemia. Other charities can benefit the environment and animals. Other charities work towards helping areas and individuals who have been affected by a natural disaster such as hurricanes, landslides, flooding, or earthquakes.

No matter the effort and cause you support, it is important that you donate to charities because it will help others. The tax deduction is simply a benefit that comes from having a good heart.

Tax Benefits within the U.S.

There are many benefits that you can obtain by donating to charity and a tax benefit is just one of them. If you donate to a charitable organization that is a qualifying and non-profit organization, you may be able to claim that donation on your income taxes. It is important that you itemize each deduction. It is important that you get all receipts for your donations or at the very least, a written confirmation of the donation from the charity you donated to. This does not include only monetary donations; this includes any type of donation you give rather money or material, which you intend to claim on your income tax returns.

The United States does not limit how much you can donate to charity, but it does limit how much you can claim as a deduction when filing your income taxes. The law limits the amount you can claim as deduction to 20, 30, or 50% of your adjusted gross income. This depends on the charity to which you have donated. You should speak with a lawyer or accountant to determine how the laws apply to your specific situation.

Promotional Value of Donations

If you run a business and sell any type of service or product, you could hold a donation with real promotional value in your hands. Think about it, when there is a devastating event that occurs within the world, you may see Wal-Mart giving away millions of bottles of water. You see these acts of kindness on the television, in the newspapers, and everywhere, because this business donated something for a good cause. Of course, you do not have to be a large company like Wal-Mart to benefit from that kind of promotional value.

Giving away a product or service, or even donating some of your time to a charity could hold great advertising value for your company. Not only will you be able to deduct what you donate when you file income taxes, but also consumers will see you are a caring company and likely look to you for what they need.
