The Reality

You may have seen them on your way to work, into the grocery store, or just simply as you are walking along minding your own business. These are the hungry, the poor, and the homeless of our countries. When we see these people, our first reaction is to judge and look away. While we may feel bad for these people, often times we do nothing. We judge the poor, hungry, and homeless for their situation and think or even say it is their own fault. Reality is these people are hungry, poor, and homeless for many different reasons, which may not be under their control.

What are some of the reasons a person could become in need of help?

Well perhaps they lost the only income that was coming into their home and for whatever reason (lack of skills, education, or lack of opportunities) have not been able to find work. Perhaps, they became ill and their illness has left them with the inability to work. Perhaps an accident or injury has prevented them from normally working in the only job they knew how to do. The reasons that a person can become in need are endless. We as their neighbors, should help the homeless, poor, and hungry without question.

Our world is full of generosity in the face of disaster and for those who need our help overseas. We should also help those within our own country. We need to come together and help our neighbors. The reality is these people could be our brothers, sisters, cousins, mothers, or best friends. It is up to us to help give the opportunity for a better quality of life.

Tomorrow it could be you!

When speaking of reality, the reality is this…Tomorrow it could be you! You could experience a life-changing situation that leads to your being the person in their shoes. Would you want someone to lend a hand in your time of need? Absolutely, we all would. The good rule to remember is “Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you”. In other words, help others now because you never know when it is you that needs help.

According to statistics, the faces of the homeless, poor, and hungry come in wide varieties. With these statistics it shows that these people are not only those who did not finish high school, they are not necessarily unemployed, single, or specifically male or female. Furthermore, those in need fall into the older and younger category. There is no one specific face, for the homeless, poor, and hungry. Therefore, you can deduce that it may be you tomorrow, who needs help.

Here are some statistics to think about:
  • 45% of those that are in need received a high school diploma
  • 24% have full or part time jobs
  • The average age of those in need is 35 years
  • 51% of those in need are single men
  • 12% are single women
  • 34% of those in need have families with younger children

With these statistics, you can easily see that the face of the poor, hungry, and homeless is no specific gender, race, type, or age. As a whole, our entire country needs to help these people lead a better quality of life.
